Overview of STTI Honor Society

The mission of the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI), is to advance world health and celebrate nursing excellence in scholarship, leadership, and service.

STTI membership is by invitation to baccalaureate and graduate nursing students who demonstrate excellence in scholarship and to nurse leaders exhibiting exceptional achievements in nursing in one of three areas of scholarship. A nurse leader must demonstrate achievement in one of three main areas; scholarship, leadership, or service and practice.

  • 39 percent of active members hold master’s and/or doctoral degrees; 51 percent are in staff positions; 19 percent are administrators or supervisors; 18 percent are faculty/academics, and 12 percent are in advanced practice.
  • There are roughly 540 chapters at more than 700 institutions of higher education throughout Armenia, Australia, Botswana, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, England, Ghana, Hong Kong, Japan, Kenya, Lebanon, Malawi, Mexico, the Netherlands, Pakistan, Philippines, Portugal, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Swaziland, Sweden, Taiwan, Tanzania, Thailand, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America.

Chapter News

  • Join Sigma in Singapore, July 25-28th 2024

    Dear Sigma Friends,

Sigma is hosting an international conference in Singapore from July 25-28th and our chapter is delighted that an Alpha Beta Eta member and USU alum, Ms. Laura Deware Jones, FNP-BC, was invited to present her research. We are so proud, and offer our heartfelt congratulations to Laura on this achievement!
Laura and a few members are exploring options for the trip and want to gauge interest in securing a group rate for flights or simply finding others who want to meet up.

Is anyone else interested in joining the group? If we don't have enough participants for a group rate in a given city, those interested can still let us know and we can meet up once in Singapore or coordinate hotels if that is desired. Laura plans to depart from Kansas City, and another member may travel from LA.

We are all so excited for this opportunity for our members to network, and for Laura to share her research!

    Please reach out to:

    Laura Deware-Jones, FNP-BC

History of Alpha Beta Eta Chapter at United States University

The School of Nursing at United States University became interested in initiating a Sigma Theta Tau International chapter in 2021. As the University gained momentum with student enrollment, expanding faculty positions, and the first Doctoral program, a Nursing Honor Society chapter application was submitted. Many faculty have previous experiences in Sigma chapters and agreed to assume leadership roles within the application process. Dean Jennifer Billingsley provided wholehearted professional and financial support for the endeavor. To date, Dr. Gay Goss  (president) has led the charge of the application procedures. The Inaugural Board and Committees of Dr. Alicia Hinton (Vice-President), Dr. Amber Porter (Secretary), Dr. Seun Ogunjimi (Treasurer), Dr. Donna Stachowicz, (Counselor), Dr. Linda Haen  (Leadership Succession Chair), and Dr. Joann Grunow (Governance  Chair) completed all requirements for Chartering. Aside from the inaugural lineup, several full-time faculty members contributed to the overall process. On April 7, 2022, United States University welcomes Alpha Beta Eta to the Nursing campus.

Alpha Beta Eta at US University - General Chapter Information

The United States University College of Nursing & Health Sciences (CONHS) established an STTI chapter in April 2022, after a year or more of planning and review from the STTI organization. Faculty members who were already members of STTI chapters led the campaign to establish a chapter at USU. With support from Dr. Billingsley, our dean at that time, as well as Dr. Scott Burris, the provost, members of the honor society established a steering committee whose charge was to start a Sigma Theta Tau International chapter at USU.

The United States University’s chapter became the 605th chapter in the organization. Our chapter name, Alpha Beta Eta, is a result of us being the 605th STTI chapter with the names given sequentially based upon the Greek alphabet. The chartering ceremony took place on April 7th, 2022. During the ceremony, 2 nurse leader members and 127 new student and alumni members were inducted. Our goal is to induct at least 100 students in the 2022-2023 school year, and at least one nurse leader member.

For more information, including specific membership requirements, applications for nurse leaders, and more, please visit the membership criteria page linked here
